Wekiva Youth Camp
Florida Federation of Garden Clubs
Just a few miles outside the big city of Orlando, lies a bit of old Florida, Wekiwa Spring State Park. You start to notice a gradual change in the scenery as you approach the park, large oaks with hanging moss, pines, and palmetto. All surrounded in their sandy natural habitat. Inside the park is Wekiva Youth Camp, a camp for Kindergarten through 8th graders. From mid-June through July, campers attend for a week to take part in programs led by adult garden club volunteers. The programs emphasize nature study, conservation, and crafts. Several of our club members have attended the leadership training weekend where they learned teaching strategies for working with children.
Once again this year, Wellington Garden Club will be awarding scholarships to several campers, paying a portion of their tuition costs. We have also made financial donations to the Wekiva Building Fund and are an active participant in the Labels for Education program which helps pay for supplies for the camp .
